Toronto Artists Scene: Reflects on a previous interview with Jasy Official

Author: James Mac Donald

Jasy, I would like to thank you for taking the time for this exclusive interview. Your music career has just started and is taking off. You have had great success in launching your music career in Europe during your teenage years, and now building a new audience in Canada. With the help of technology and social media, we can now get more people in Canada and the rest of the world to learn about you and your music. With Covid restrictions lifting this year, many great concerts and festivals are starting to return. This year will be an incredible new music scene happening.

Teaser video release called "Criminal"

Let's begin with a discussion about the teaser video released titled “Criminal”, for your song, which was released on all platforms. Link for the “Criminal by the official Jasy Music.

Since the release of your video, many great developments have occurred in your career. We frequently hear about the artist's insights into the thought process when piecing the video segments together. Can you share with us, Jasy, how the video began and how it was created?

Before I released “Criminal”, I thought it would be a fun idea to do a small photoshoot with different settings and styles to see which one portrays the song best. And after taking many photos, my team and I decided it would be a good idea to release a 15-second teaser video to get people excited. So, I changed my outfit and spontaneously created a teaser, which everyone loved!

What has the response been from your fans and those who have been following your post?

I got a good amount of views, and since it was the first song I released with a teaser, people were getting excited about it. Friends and family started sharing it, and I started to get a bit more exposure on social media.

What were some of the fun, enjoyable moments you remember when you created and worked on the set?

Some fun things we did were picking different styles of outfits and pairing them with the settings and backgrounds used at the photography studio. I felt as if each one resembled me in a different way

Did you work with producers or collaborate with other talent while creating the video?

I had an amazing team of professionals who helped me with the song, the cover photo, and the teaser "ProdbyaftrParty" is my producer based in Toronto. He was a great help in bringing “Criminal” to life. Philippe Bicos is my photographer who took amazing photos and the teaser video. I have also collaborated with a Belgian artist and a producer on other projects. My mother helped as a stylist, and my dad is my manager who helps with music production and songwriting.

Was the video made from life's events you witnessed or saw happening around you?

I feel like I have an old soul, so I always want my music videos to be portrayed in a 90’s setting, which is what we did with the “Criminal” teaser. I love record players, so when I found it at the studio, I thought. “What better way to make it 90’s by including a vintage record player?

How did you feel when you saw it put together, and it was put on social media on the first day it went public?

I was extremely excited and nervous because I hadn’t released many songs or videos before this, so I was happy that people could finally hear my true voice again. At the end of the day, I just wanted people to relate to my music and feel a certain vibe while listening to it.

We saw the clip on YouTube of performing in the studio, is it a lot of hard work. Can you tell us about some of the new songs you are working on at the moment or give us a hint of some things that are in progress? I’m currently working on 3 new singles and planning on releasing an EP in the fall of this year. As for the hint, keep an eye out for my social media for teasers. What are some of the challenges when you're recording a new song in the studio? Getting things done properly in a timely fashion can only be done by lots of practice at my home studio, and preparing myself physically and mentally before spending lots of hours in a recording studio with my producer. Who would you like to collaborate with if you could choose anyone to work with? I would love to collaborate with J Balvin, Bad Bunny, Ariana Grande, and Chris Brown someday.

Is it challenging to balance your life with school, work, and at the same time work on your music career? (How do you keep things in check or in focus?) It's not easy to balance school and music, but with proper time management and passion for music and doing well in school, I try to make both achievable. To de-stress and focus, I love journaling, being in nature, and spending a lot of time with my husky.

Is it difficult to manage your life while juggling school, work, and pursuing your music career? (How do you maintain balance and stay focused?) Apart from singing and songwriting, I also play piano and ukulele. Painting and going to the gym everyday helps me stay creative and motivated. You can check my art page @etheraleysinart.

Europe Your musical career began to take off in Europe; how has it been since you moved back to Canada? Could you tell us about your experiences from being overseas and what you encountered there?

Europe, for me, was the place where I discovered my passion for singing. I was 13 when I started singing, and like any teenager, I was intimidated by performing in front of people. However, with the amazing support of my family and friends, I slowly developed more confidence, and I took every opportunity. I got out and started to perform at high school and local talent shows. Do you find or notice any difference between the music scene in Europe and Canada? If yes, how is it different? The music culture in Europe is very different from that of North America. Europeans tend to drift towards pop music, and since I’m an R&B singer, I was a bit worried that it wouldn’t be well received. However, the young local audience ended up loving it.

Have you ever had that moment when travelling around Canada and Europe where it moved you to write a song about what you saw or the things around you? Not at this stage of my career, but coming to think of it, the places I’ve seen, that might not be a bad idea to use as inspiration. I do have many great memories of the places I’ve visited, so one day I hope to write them down and show the world. How many languages do you currently speak? I speak English, French, Romanian, and Dutch fluently, and recently learning Spanish, which I want to be fluent in as well. Have you considered integrating the different languages you have learned into your songs?

In Criminal, I begin the song by singing in French, and in the future, I would love to incorporate more of the Languages I already speak in future projects. Life and inspiration

How would you characterize your music style or the sound for those who might not be familiar with your recordings?

I would say that my music style is a mix of R&B, Hip hop, Pop, Jazz, and Reggaetón. When did you first start singing ( at what age?) Was it a natural development, or were there other influences in your life?

My passion for music began at age 7 when I started playing the piano. When I was 13, I discovered my passion for singing and songwriting. Being a part of music schools at a young age influenced me to start singing.

Where do you draw inspiration from when composing a new song?

My inspiration comes from the people I meet or who I already have in my life, things I do every day, and things I see and hear on social media. What are some of your musical influences for creating, for example, classical Jazz? Some of my musical influences are: Selena, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, and Tupac.

Future songs or video releases

Can we expect a new music video for an amazing new track in the upcoming weeks or months?

Yes! I am currently producing another single, and hopefully an EP album soon, which I cannot wait to release. I want to incorporate different languages in my music such as Spanish, and French, to show that I’m very multicultural. More photoshoots and music videos will definitely follow as well. How can fans follow you and see where you are performing next? (ie, Instagram or other media) My social media is @theofficialjasy on Instagram, @officialjasymusic on Facebook and YouTube, and my Spotify is Jasy. Thanks again for the interview Jasy, we hope to hear more great things about you in the coming weeks and soon your new upcoming releases… If you like the interview, hit the like and share it with your friends.
