Pulsing synthesizers swell and build, and the beat—produced by the award-winning LA native K-waz—wastes no time kicking off with fanciful aplomb. Like riding passenger in a purple Maserati through the nighttime streets of Los Angeles, the world aglow with neon and glittering lights, propelling the listener through a sleek, stylish soundscape in this empowering boss-queen anthem.

“You can say my name, you can say my name, yup, you can do it,” chants Ms. Toi, hip-hop royalty.

Known for her dynamic flow and tongue-twisting lyricism, Ms. Toi is considered one of the best emcees from the West Coast, or any coast—she’s your favourite rapper’s favourite rapper. Earning her stripes in the ’90s, she collaborated with Ice Cube in 1999 on the hit song “You Can Do It,” which was featured in a couple of movie soundtracks, compilations, and greatest hits, and is still popular to this day. In 2001, Ms. Toi released her debut album with Universal Music, the underrated “That Girl,” showcasing her talents alongside emcees such as E-40, MC Ren, and Poppa LQ.

“Diss a bitch quick

She can't even catch the lyrics”

She doesn't disappoint here, showing why she's the boss as she delivers timeless hardcore rap, fully equipped with modern references to “ghosting” and social-media comments. Full of clever lines and blink-and-you-miss-it moments, you'll definitely want to listen to the song multiple times to catch all the punchlines Ms. Toi delivers.

“They want that shout-out

Do anything for the clout”

Featured on the track is Sage the Goddess, one of Toronto’s most talented up-and-coming artists, in a unique, timely East-meets-West twist of fate. Sage can rap—whether it be hardcore boasting, relatable insights on being a woman today, wordplay with an edge of humour—always performed with a power and presence that makes you stand up and listen. And she can sing like an absolute angel, too. Fun fact: Sage won a best lyricist award in 2017, beating out men and women alike for the top prize.

“You can say my name

And it's Goddess, Sage”

Sage floats on the beat, bringing a decidedly Canadian touch to the second half of the song. Different voice, different flow, different attitude—no less awesome an addition to the track. Women will relate to her rapping, men will be intimidated by the voice of a confident woman who knows what she wants and how to get it. You can say her name. Yup, you can do it.

In a world where even casual listeners are picking sides left and right—Drake vs Kendrick, Toronto vs LA—leave it to the ladies to lead the charge for unity.
